Man of steel

Tuesday, 9 September 2008

Last Updated: Monday, 8 September 2008

What began as a passion for renovating old houses has turned into a $200 million a year business for the founder of JG King Homes, John King (right). It is a story that has been 22 years in the making, and is a model case study for enterprises to stick to what they do best.

King began with a building franchise that he bought into and started operating around the Ballarat area in regional Victoria. When that business started to falter, King left the franchise group in 1985 and set up by himself. His company now employs 330 people and builds about 1000 new homes every year.

A big boost came in 1999 when BHP decided it no longer was interested in producing roll-form steel framing for the domestic building market. King bought the roll-forming equipment for himself, and made an immediate 30% saving on his raw materials costs. Learn King’s tips and his top guidelines for success in the domestic construction market.
