The back of the bakery that Tom O’Toole (right) took over in 1984 was so rat infested and run-down that it had to be bulldozed and re-built. Both his bank manager and accountant were convinced he was mad.

But he stuck to his dream despite the pressure driving him to the brink of suicide. Now he has five bakeries and a thriving business. “Today they all think I’m a guru,” he says. His shares the lessons learned about handling the ups and downs, managing staff and building a business.
