Facebook Chat goes mainstream

Monday, 28 April 2008

Facebook has introduced an instant messaging service across its platform, WebProNews reports.

The feature has been in the pipeline for a while, and started being rolled out in a limited way earlier this month , but it is now available for all Facebook users.

The instant messaging feature appears at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen when a person logs into their Facebook profile. It lets the user know which of their Facebook friends are currently logged in and allows them to send and receive short, email style messages.

According to WebProNews, even in its early days Facebook Chat appears to be popular, with the term being mentioned on user “walls” – a kind of noticeboard users have on their profiles – occurring at unprecedented levels.

And where the users go, soon after the app developers follow – no doubt a widget built on the back of instant messaging is just around the corner.
