eBay and PayPal dominate Aussie online shopping

eBay may have dropped its attempt to force its vendors to use its PayPal payment system, but that doesn’t mean that the dominance of either one in Australia is about to come to an end any time soon.

eBay may have dropped its attempt to force its vendors to use its PayPal payment system, but that doesn’t mean that the dominance of either one in Australia is about to come to an end any time soon.

Hitwise has put together data on the performance of the various online auction sites in Australia for the week ended 28 June this year. It paints a picture of unequivocal dominance by eBay, which accounts for more than 83% of online auction traffic, miles ahead of the 3.78% and 2.53% notched up by respectively by rivals Trading Post online and OZtion.

As for PayPal, it is similarly dominant, accounting for 82.24% of visits in the week, miles ahead of the 1.85% that went to Google Checkout and 0.88% to Paymate Australia.

The dominance of eBay and PayPal in Australia is particularly significant in light of the fact that Australians are among the world’s most enthusiastic online auction shoppers. According to Hitwise, auction websites accounted for 38.11% of all visits to shopping and classified websites in May 2008 in Australia, compared to 21.35% by US internet users.
