We’re nervous about mobile web shopping

Tuesday, 15 July 2008

Most Australians would not use a mobile device to make a purchase, pay a bill or do their banking, especially through an online retailer, a new survey has revealed.

A high 78% of the 1200 Australians, surveyed for the Unisys Security Index, said they would not use a mobile device to perform basic purchasing or financial functions. Only 7% said they would consider it, while 12% said they already pay bills, bank or buy via mobile.

The overwhelming reason for the poor view of mobile transactions is a perceived lack of security, with 52% describing them as either not very secure or not secure at all.

Those concerns are heightened when shopping through online retailers, with only 2% saying they believe online retailers will provide the best security, behind phone companies (6%) and banks (51%).

But, for quite a few people, it doesn’t matter who they are dealing with, they just don’t want deal with money over the mobile – 33% say they don’t trust anyone to ensure mobile web security.
