Bosses ban iPods – but it might not be such a good idea

Recent research conducted by international software corporation Symantec reveals 75% of companies have policies restricting the use of personal media players, but only 45% of employees actually adhere to those rules.

Recent research conducted by international software corporation Symantec reveals 75% of companies have policies restricting the use of personal media players, but only 45% of employees actually adhere to those rules.

The research also indicated companies need to be careful while developing policies regarding social networking sites, such as MySpace or Facebook, because strictly banning them could result in a negative backlash from staff.

Symantec vice president Craig Scroggie told ITwire.com: “IT managers have to strike a balance between controlling risks and offering flexibility and choice that maximises employee productivity.

“If they don’t, they won’t be able to attract and retain talented people,” he says.

“It puts workers at odds with information risk management policies,” Scroggie says. “Companies will need to rethink their entire approach.”
