In 2005, Geoffrey Speiser, a dentist, noticed there was no cure or adequate knowledge about bad breath. He also had an interest in the internet and set up a market for patients that wanted treatment for bad breath via the anominity of the internet.

There is now an internet business worldwide, a breath clinic for actual consultation, and a free screening service that allows people to test for bad breath and gum disease. More than 80% of revenue comes from online.

The company did have one near death experience. In the beginning it was selling a US mouth wash and the US company sent an email one day saying they were no longer going to sell outside Australia and they were removing the link from their website.

“Our online sales plummeted by 80% overnight,” Speiser says. “From that we learnt to own the complete vertical product, manufacture our own products, own our own website and have ongoing licenses for any products we do not own.

The next big move is to develop bacterial (pro-biotic) solutions to other problems, home tests that are predictable and accurate and expand into other countries.
