Men’s ties, porn and lingerie still sell well

We have all heard that lipstick still sells well in a recession because consumers see it as a necessary pick-me-up. But other items are emerging as being downturn-proof, including golf balls, iPods, men’s ties and cat food.

We have all heard that lipstick still sells well in a recession because consumers see it as a necessary pick-me-up. But other items are emerging as being downturn-proof, including golf balls, iPods, men’s ties and cat food.

The Australian Financial Review reports this morning that men’s ties fare well because men tend to dress more conservatively, and so those who have been wearing just shirt and trousers are now bringing the tie out of the wardrobe.

David Jones says its recession-proof items inclide iPods, men’s and women’s fragrance hampers, gift cards and lingerie. Porn is selling well, with 70,000 attending Sexpo and spending more than $5 million on products.

The pet industry is still holding up, as pet owners remain brand-loyal even in a downturn. And popular this year are Christmas costumes for pets, including reindeer antlers, hats, sunglasses and wigs.

And while expensive sports equipment has taken a hit, the accessories are selling, including golf balls and gloves.

yeah, I think it's true more men are wearing ties these days, if not for the sole reason there are more job interviews going on :) but why ipods? i run a site selling men's ties on a monthly basis, it's kind of a new idea. http://www.tie-club.com
