Nobody can do what I do in my business but I’m so, so tired. Help!
Dear Aunty B,
I run my own business and it’s been hard work from the day I started.
Now I find even though I have five employees there are still just not enough hours in the day to get things done. I’m working every hour there is but I am just totally exhausted and stressed. It’s hard to pass on any of my workload to my staff as some things only I can do and other things I feel that I can do a lot better than them.
I can’t keep this up. Help!
Jade,
Bentleigh
Dear Jade,
Take a deep breath and repeat after me – I am a control freak. It’s nothing to be ashamed of and I’ve had to do this myself. The first step to addressing your problem is to admit you have a problem. You need to delegate some of your work, that’s what your five employees are there for.
Now sit down with a piece of paper and write down what you do each day. Divide these things into three lists – those tasks that can only be done by you (be honest here), ones that you think you do a better job on than anyone else and things you don’t need to do. Now delegate or outsource all those tasks in the second two lists.
Of course everything would be better done by you. Everybody feels this way, especially we control freaks. But sometimes you just have to let go for your own sanity.
Be smart,
Your Aunty B
