Monique Conheady began car rental service Flexicar when looking for a "green" project to try. After learning of a car sharing service in the US, she saw an opportunity in the Australian market to open a similar business.
The business works by signing up for a subscription. When members require a car, they book a vehicle, then take their company-supplied card to that location in order to start the engine. The company says the process requires "no paperwork, no hassles and no queues".
"After a pilot of several months, the kinks were ironed out and the concept was proven. A more comprehensive service was officially launched in August and the service has since grown from four to 80 cars."
The company has experienced challenges including obtaining initial funding, but Conheady says with revenue of $1.3 million, the company has proven a "green" company can enjoy "the long but rewarding journey to profitability".
MOST CHALLENGING PART OF STARTING YOUR BUSINESS:
"It's always more complex and more expensive than you think."
