After an extensive career in retail management and leadership, Brain Walker recognised a gap in retail consulting, particularly in advising retailers on the 'how to' of retail operations and systems. So in 2005, with start up funds of just $5,000, The Retail Doctor was born.
"Our specialty is to build business fitness through improving client positioning, distribution, sales, people, productivity, systems, profitability and value," says Walker.
While starting the business wasn't without its challenges, Walker says he had to trust in his own ability.
"I knew I needed enough belief in myself and my business plan to make it happen effectively and make it profitable, especially in the very early stages."
"Today, our demand is higher than our supply (there are only so many hours in a day!), so we are careful to choose clients that will give us the greatest possible value for our time."
So what sets The Retail Doctor apart from other, similar, businesses?
"Our ‘Business Fitness' model is unique to The Retail Doctor and is based on completing a retail operations diagnostic, identifying the gaps in operations and developing a plan on ‘how to' fill them," Walker explains.
"We have developed products to focus in on the gap areas, such as ‘Effective People' and ‘Category Cardio' which enables us to sell in ongoing solutions and strengthen the retailers ‘fit' position."
"While our competitors are providing the ‘what to fix' approach, we go that step further and provide the ‘how to' to go with it, using a tailored approach rather than a one size fits all."
BEST PART OF STARTING YOUR BUSINESS?
"The ability to create value for customers and build a better retail environment for us all. It is very rewarding to see the results we can achieve by providing clients with sustainability, replicable growth, and ultimately increased profitability and value."
