How do I maintain the workplace "love"?

Many of you might have seen this fantastic clip on YouTube recently, Jill and Kevin's Big Day. A week or so ago it had been viewed by more than five million people, and when I sent a link out in one of my recent eNewsletters we had so many responses my assistant became quite frazzled (with me).

Are you taking full advantage of social media?

Author: Tim Sharp on

The other day I was chatting to a friend and successful entrepreneur, when she commented on some of my recent initiatives and asked how I found out about and used so many of the new social media and online tools that are now available.

I've been delivering a coaching and workshop program throughout most of this year, aimed at helping those within a particular organisation build more resilience and stay productive during some difficult times. The project has involved consulting to key players in the upper echelons of management and also, delivering a series of practical workshops to staff at various levels of the business.

During a recent workshop, in which I was working with a leadership group to increase their understanding of mental health issues in the workplace and enhance their ability to manage any warning signs quickly and effectively, a participant raised several concerns about dealing with his colleague's "personal issues" and queried where and when he could "cross the line".

I’ve lost my purpose as an entrepreneur. Help!

Author: Timothy Sharp on

In a recent coaching session with a successful entrepreneur and businessman, my client posed the following question - "I know what I'm trying to achieve but I'm not sure I really know why I want to achieve it. Can you help me?"

Last year I was honoured to receive a Future Summit Leadership Award from the Australian Davos Connection (that's me just behind our Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd). Just a few weeks ago I returned to the Future Summit as an awardee and as a speaker at the event.

We're a small-medium sized business and don't have a budget to "wow" our customers...what can we do to create a positive impression?

Our team meetings and discussions seem to be all about misery and problems these days – how can we recover a bit more positivity?

My team want re-assurance. What should I do?

Author: Tim Sharp on

Times are tough and everyone's stressed; I'm a manager and find that much of my time at the moment is being spent trying to reassure my team and colleagues, but there are some who, despite my best efforts, don't seem to feel they're being heard.  How do I let them know that I'm aware of their concerns?

David, an executive coaching client of mine and the owner of a medium sized business, recently raised the issue of some problems he was having with a manager of one of his divisions.  According to David, the manager (Greg) repeatedly failed to complete tasks they'd discussed and agreed he would be responsible for.

After posing a series of carefully selected questions, it became apparent that the issue was one of performance management.

At face value, David was doing everything right - he had clarified the task and checked that Greg understood what to do.
