Google moves into Africa

In a bid to improve information access in Africa, Google has adapted some of its applications to meet Uganda's fast growing demand for mobile computing technology to better serve communities' needs.

Google's launch of these applications is part of a partnership with the Grameen Foundation and is the result of 18 months research into how to get information services into poorer communities.

The new applications will help users in Uganda with mobile phones, which lack fully dedicated web browsers, to access information about health, news, farming and other web browsing tools on their mobile phones via SMS.

Google Trader is one of the applications that have attracted considerable interest, allowing people to buy and sell items by SMS and hunt for jobs.
