It’s a small thing, but for regular business travellers it can be oh so annoying – the requirement to take your laptop out of its bag so it can be x-rayed at the airport security gate.
But according to the New York Times, the laptop security ritual is about to become a thing of the past with the imminent release of new x-ray friendly laptop bags.
Luggage makers Pathfinder Luggage and Targus will reportedly have bags built using the new x-ray friendly technology in stores in the US – and hopefully here – by October this year.
The two models Pathfinder has in the pipeline, a briefcase with laptop holder and wheeled carry on, will cost $US100 to $US150, and $US150 to $US200 respectively. Targus has four designs coming, including a backpack version, which will sell for between $US39 and $US100.
The trick with the new bags is apparently in the x-ray friendly material they are made out of and a design feature that ensures that all the bits and pieces that usually go into laptop bags are stored so they don’t obscure the view of the computer itself.
The US agency in charge of transport security has already said customers that use the bags won’t have to take their laptops out for x-ray inspection at airports. Here’s hoping the Australian authorities follow suit.
