Google TV could be impacted by net filter

Google's upcoming TV software product, Google TV, could be impacted by the Government's proposed internet filter.

"We do have technical concerns about filtering," Google Australia engineering director Alan Noble told News.com.au. "There is potential to degrade performance. It will also impact not just IPTV but all kinds of web products and services."

"That may well be a consideration in how quickly it's deployed in Australia," he said.

Noble said the success of the product would depend on high internet speeds, and if the filter impacts performance, as some analysts have predicted, it could severely impact usability.

The company so far has not given any indication of a solid release date for the technology in Australia. It will be released in the US later this year.

For anyone outside the big cities, GoogleTV is irrelevant anyway. My own Telstra "broadband" connection usually runs so slowly that I cannot even stream audio, let alone video. Even a 2 minute YouTube video will pause several times while it plays. Watching a TV show would be a nightmare. What's more, the broadband plans outside the urban centres are so expensive and download limits so small that watching TV would gobble up a month's allowance in no time.

As for the government's proposed Internet filter, we have a lot more to fear from government censorship of the Internet than it running (even more) slowly. Still, I'm glad to hear yet another reason why this legislation should be stopped.
