A new report from online security firm Symantec has found that both the iOS and Android mobile platforms are vulnerable to malicious attacks.

In the new “Window into Mobile Device Security” paper, the firm found that more business devices are being connected to third-party cloud ecosystems that can compromise security.

“While offering improved security over traditional desktop-based operating systems, both iOS and Android are still vulnerable to many existing categories of attacks,” it found.

“iOS’s security model offers strong protection against traditional malware, primarily due to Apple’s rigorous app certification process and their developer certification process, which vets the identity of each software author and weeds out attackers.”

It also noted that Google has “opted for a less rigorous certification model”, allowing app developers to release programs without inspection.

“This lack of certification has arguably led to today’s increasing volume of Android-specific malware.”
