Tech giant Apple may be looking at increasing the technical quality of music available on its iTunes store, according to a report from CNN.
The report claims that Apple and other retailers are in talks with record labels to see if the song files being sold could be provided in 24-bit format. Currently files are downgraded to 16-bit.
Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope records under the Universal label, told CNN that Apple is currently in discussions to introduce the new format.
"We've gone back now at Universal, and we're changing our pipes to 24 bit. And Apple has been great," Iovine said.
"We're working with them and other digital services -- download services -- to change to 24 bit. And some of their electronic devices are going to be changed as well. So we have a long road ahead of us."
