People love to blame others when something goes wrong. When a mistake is made, many leap in wanting to know who the idiot was that did something wrong. Yet mistakes are how we learn... and continuously improve. And from continuous improvement we can get innovation.

Many people still have trouble communicating their expectations of each other clearly and professionally. This in turn leads to misunderstandings, conflict and poor motivation. A common cause of conflict and inefficiencies is that people are not aware of exactly what they are meant to be doing.

I have had the pleasure and challenge of providing counselling over the last few weeks for people making critical life decisions. While this work is a psychologist service, it makes me realise how important these counselling and decision-making skills are for life and work, and especially if you lead a team.

Bullying is against the law (
see last week's blog) and as a manager you MUST take responsibility to ensure your team are behaving appropriately and bullying is not tolerated. And if your behaviour is considered to be bullying – change NOW. Can you say out loud that you do not support bullying in any way... without someone in your team shaking his or her head because in fact YOU are the bully?
