I cried at work and now I’m humiliated! How do I come back from this?
Dear Aunty B,
Last week my boss was giving me some feedback on my performance that wasn’t great.
It was really only a little thing but I couldn’t help it and burst into tears in his office. He didn’t have any tissues so I had to sit there crying with a runny nose and everybody saw thanks to the glass doors.
It’s not the first time I’ve cried at work but other times I have at least made it to the toilets and so managed a secret cry. I feel humiliated that everyone knows I cried over such a really little thing. I really like my job. How do I get some respect back?
Don’t worry – crying happens to the best of us. Some people are just more prone to tears than others. Even though you may feel embarrassed about your tears, as long as it is not a weekly occurrence I am sure most of your co-workers have hardly given it a second thought.
If you don’t believe me then maybe you will believe the chief operating officer of Facebook, Cheryl Sandberg, who revealed in an interview with Jezebel that she has teared up at work.
"Nobody is going to publish the next Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and say that crying is one of them. But I am saying that it happens ... It has happened to me more than once. It will happen to me again. Rather than spend all this time beating ourselves up for it, let's accept ourselves. We are human beings ... and we can be our whole selves at work."
Also let this be a warning to the business owners out there to buy some tissues! They are probably going to be used sooner or later.
Your Aunty B
