Meet the Smart50 of 2013

Meet the 2013 Smart50. SmartCompany is proud to announce the winners of the SmartCompany – Crowe Horwath Smart50 Awards. The awards recognise and celebrate Australia’s fastest growing SMEs in 2012-13.

The awards are based on average annual revenue growth over the past three financial years. Entrants had to have revenue over $500,000 and show positive growth in each year to be eligible for the Smart50.

The top prize, number one on the Smart50, goes to the business with the highest growth over that period.

In addition, the awards also recognise the Top Leader, Top Exporter, Top Franchise, Top Digital Innovator, Leading Sustainable Business, Top Employer, Top Regional SME, Top Retailer, Smart and Lasting and Community award. These awards were judged by SmartCompany acting editor Melinda Oliver, RMIT University Professor Kosmas Smyrnios and independent experts in each field.

Melinda Oliver is the Acting Editor of SmartCompany. Previously Melinda was a custom magazine editor with News Limited, managing a portfolio of print and iPad titles for premium clients. Melinda has also been features editor for Australian fashion business magazine Ragtrader, and worked as a fashion industry reporter for Drapers magazine in London. Her early career was spent at Fairfax, where she was a community news journalist on a stable of Melbourne-based magazines. She has an Honours degree in Media and Communications from the University of Melbourne.

Award Criteria

To be eligible for the Smart50 list, your company must:

  • Report the past three fiscal years of revenue*.
  • Each year must show revenue growth.
  • Be an independent Australian company (not a subsidiary).
  • Revenue must not exceed $200 million.
  • Revenue must not be below $500,000.

* By entering the awards, you agree to be contacted by the sponsor Crowe Horwath and to have your revenue published on SmartCompany in general terms.

About your entry

Your company will also be considered for all major awards relevant to your business. All entrants must complete the Smart50 list entry form, including those wishing to enter a category.

The awards are decided by a panel of experts who will judge the innovation of each company's product or service. Categories will be judged separately to the Smart50 list, according to the criteria detailed below.

Awarded for innovation and excellence in international business. Entrants should have solid growth in export markets, exceptional supply chain management, creative measures to find new markets and innovative solutions to export challenges.

The hall of fame for those on the Smart50 who have stood the test of time. Entrants must have appeared in the Smart50 ranking for the past two years, have sustained revenue growth, implemented leading initiatives, show employee career paths and solid foundations for future development.

Community Award

Awarded to the business which has demonstrated commitment to the local community. Evidence should be shown of its importance to the local community, and leadership and business skills contributions.
