Job directory and recruitment agency Marble Group began when founders Gary Denton and Lee Corbitt became frustrated with the impersonal approach they believed was being taken by other companies.

"The decision was based primarily on a shared passion to create a company and a brand that would be viewed as completely unique and highly innovative throughout the recruitment sector and wider business community."

The company, which recorded 109% growth during the past three years and $7.6 million in revenue during 2008-09, immediately ran into problems.

"Believe it or not, our biggest challenge was recruitment. While there are thousands of recruiters operating in the Australian marketplace, there are far fewer that operate with the level of integrity and professionalism we demand."

"We have learnt never to compromise on our internal hires. As a specialist recruiter we rely heavily on our brand and our reputation and we've worked hard to develop an outstanding name. Short-term gain means nothing if you sacrifice the quality of service delivery."

Denton says the company has faced hard times during the downturn. But in order to keep the company moving along, it has invested more time and effort into training up staff and keeping staff morale high in order to retain key company players.

"We understand that the number one issue associated with a deflated market is maintaining staff morale. With this in mind we have worked tirelessly to ensure our staff, motivated by career growth, have a sense of purpose and a realisation that they are on a clearly laid out path."

Despite saying 35-40% of the recruitment industry's business has disappeared, Denton says that "the success of the business is due in a very large part to the people we have within the group. Our consultants are open, honest and flexible; we engage the type of people that our clients like to deal with."

"Some of the other values that Marble Group hold in high regard," Denton says, "include leadership development throughout the business, a culture that nurtures creativity and giving our clients and candidates the best possible experience."
