Qantas Airways today announced it will cut 500 jobs due to a restructuring of its maintenance and engineering operations away from Victoria and into Queensland.
The consolidation is expected to save the company $100 million annually.
Most (422) of the layoffs will occur at its heavy maintenance base at Tullamarine airport in Melbourne, while another 144 will go from its base at Avalon.
The airline said 30 new maintenance jobs will be created in Melbourne, and five in Sydney, while it expects other jobs to be created in Brisbane as the maintenance of Qantas’ 737 aircrafts moves to Queensland.
“Where possible, Qantas will offer relocation to Brisbane,” the company said. “There will also be a program of voluntary redundancies.”
