Rags to riches stories commonly feature in the backgrounds of leading entrepreneurs – whether it’s JK Rowling, who started the Harry Potter series while unemployed and clinically depressed, or, closer to home, Kerry Stokes, who emerged from a disadvantaged background.

However, it’s safe to say that it’s easier to build a business when you have the support of your family and some sort of financial safety net.

It’s therefore noteworthy when you read the story of entrepreneurs like Yvonne Adams, who explains today how she managed to build a successful business despite being left without a home or money as a teenager.

Elsewhere, Alan Hargreaves reviews one of the better business books currently doing the rounds and mentor Vicki Crowe outlines how to conduct a staff appraisal.
