Not so long ago, a listing in the Yellow Pages was the most effective way for customers to locate small businesses.

Needless to say, things have changed quite dramatically. It’s now not only required for start-ups to have a web presence but also, increasingly, to take advantage of the deluge of location-based apps, such as Foursquare or Facebook Place, the latest entrant to the market.
