Qantas introduces mobile check-in

Airline giant Qantas has launched a new mobile technology that allows fliers to check-in to flights through their smartphones, as part of the company’s Next Generation Check-In Initiative.

The mobile check-in works by having users display a 2D bar code that is sent to them via a text message. The barcode is scanned by a gate reader, and a receipt is printed containing flight details including seat allocation.

Frequent Flyer members can also use the Mobile Check-In program to check their arrival and departure times, access Qantas Club locations worldwide and gain contact numbers for Qantas offices.

Chief executive Alan Joyce said in a statement the initiative is just one of many designed to reduce the amount of time customers need when boarding flights.

“Enhancing the customer experience by increasing speed and ease through our airports is the key driver for the Qantas Next Generation Check-In project,” he said. “Our research showed us our customers wanted more control over their travel experience. They want to be able to
check-in before they even arrive at the airport and then move quickly through the airport to board their flight.”
