A recent study conducted by the university of technology Sydney explained most businesses fail in their first year of business, while one in three new small businesses in Australia fail in their first year of operation, two out of four by the end of the second year, and three out of four by the fifth year. In the four years between June 2019 and June 2023, 35% of all Australian businesses closed their doors. Small businesses were significantly more at risk of collapse than large businesses, with the “survival rate” for new sole proprietors hovering at 41.5%.

While most businesses compete and copy each other in an attempt to stay ahead of the crowd, the two entrepreneurs believe most businesses fail as a result of how they market and sell themselves. Most agencies and marketers believe that more traffic is the key to growth whilst Alisha and Matt emphasise that “it’s to understand your market better than anyone else and provide more value than you charge.” They call it ‘the unsexy way to grow.’

In today’s hypercompetitive environment, you must be an authority or you are a commodity. More importantly, you must be persuasive to stand out from the crowd. “Before starting we were ‘just another agency’ and no one knew who we were. We’ve always worked in business or marketing, but it’s scary to take the leap and work for yourself,” states Matt Craike. 

Matthew navigated an unconventional path in his career. He started first as a debt collector, and moved into the world of accounting, before pivoting to videography. Craike then stumbled across an opportunity to work with two well-known figures from Australia’s Shark Tank — Sabri Suby and Davie Fogarty — in their eight and nine-figure businesses before starting Persuasion Experience alongside Alisha Colin-Hurd during the corona virus lockdown.

Together, the two entrepreneurs used the power of LinkedIn to grow their business, sharing their expertise and forming strategic partnerships. Alisha started her career working in a call centre persuading people to switch electricity providers, even though she’d never dealt with an electricity bill herself. No mean feat for a 19-year-old who consistently ranked among the top 10 sales representatives every week.

Her accolades include going on to play a key role in building two sales funnels and CRO teams from scratch for companies King Kong and Foundr, creating 500+ landing pages and funnels across 120+ niches before quitting her 9-5 forever at the age of 27 and after four ‘failed’ businesses.

Collectively, the pair have worked with 600+ businesses across 120+ niches during the span of their 16 year lead generation career. Alisha Colin-Hurd and Matt Craike developed PX using human psychology combined with proven marketing strategies that actually work so businesses can truly understand their target market, stand out from the crowd, and attract high-quality leads at premium rates.

Despite being successful in their first year of business, Alisha and Matt realised that while their business was profitable it wasn’t aligned with their dream of freedom after burning the candle at both ends. “We were bringing in great money, but we were working for the business. We looked tired and unhealthy, working 14-hour days.” So, they created marketing systems to provide more freedom.
