Power Play: Sometimes power means burning the bridge

Bridge-burning usually has a very negative connotation. Power Players know that it is sometimes necessary.

The only way to move forward might be to blow up what has gone before. It is usually very hard to do but it can make the difference between success and failure.

The mythical story about the great explorer Cortes burning his ships in order to reach the New World is a great historical example of what (sometimes) needs to be done. If you leave the door open to going back it can often mean that you can’t (or won’t) move forward.

One of the downsides of modern life is the number of choices we each have. Many of us like leaving our options open. On paper this sounds very good but too many options can also mean a lack of good decision-making.

If we never have to choose, why make a choice?

If you find yourself procrastinating about getting to the next step, maybe you need to consider burning down the house so that you can never move back. It might sound extreme but it’s usually exactly what’s required.
