Dear Aunty B,
I’m looking forward to my holidays as much as the next entrepreneur and the thought of having two whole weeks off is wonderful.
But while I know that it is important to recharge the batteries and give myself a good break from work, I also know that I’ll start missing my business pretty quickly.
So Aunty, my question is a simple one: When is it okay to start thinking about my business again without feeling guilty?
If you’ve got two weeks off, like most of the world this year, then you have a nice easy way of answering this question.
The first week must be total R&R. Read books, take long walks, have a few drinks, sleep in and, most importantly, spend as much time as you can with your family and friends.
If you are like most entrepreneurs then you owe an eternal debt of gratitude to your nearest and dearest for their support, so holidays are a great chance to pay them back with your time and attention.
In the second week, it’s inevitable that your thoughts will stray to 2013 and I think it’s fine to spend a few hours – not entire days, just a few hours – thinking about your business.
But don’t sweat the small stuff. Think big picture, about your key goals and key projects. What will you change about your business in 2013? What will a successful year look like?
I wish all entrepreneurs a happy and safe holidays. Let’s make 2013 a great year!
Your Aunty B
