There’s no denying the startup ecosystem, both in Australia and internationally, is male dominated. Structural inequality and cultural issues both play a role, but what about in our daily peer-to-peer conversations on Twitter.
We used a new web app called TweeQ to investigate which gender is getting more airtime on Twitter. The app scans your retweets and lets you know the percentage breakdown.

While most social apps are prone to bugs and glitches, here are the stats on some of the key accounts in the #startupaus hashtag.
This publication’s account clocked in with retweets 57% men and 43% women. Editor Bronwen Clune scored the best score in terms of balance we found so far, with 51% male and 49% female, with reporter Rose Powell scoring a 63% male and 37% female.
Blue Chilli’s core account retweets 85% men and 15% women. Founder Sebastien Eckersley-Maslin retweets 80% men and 20% women, lead startup advisor Catherine Eibner scored 90% men and 10% women and chief growth-hacker Alan Jones retweets 79% men and 21% women.
While Pollenizer and its founders don’t retweet often, the core account clocked in with a respectable 57% men and 43% women. TweeQ found Mick Liubinskas only retweets men, with his four retweets all being male. Cofounder and chief executive Phil Morle retweets 78% men and 22% women.
Telstra-backed accelerator Muru-d has one of the highest female participation rates and scored a balanced 53% men and 47% women. Program coordinator Annie Parker score 71% male retweets to 29% female retweets.
Perth Founder Institute coordinator Claire Robertson retweets 58% men and 42% women.
Investors and startup guru Susan Wu, who now lives in Melbourne, retweets fairly evenly, with 58% male and 42% female.
Major venture capital group Square Peg Capital tweets 83% and 17% women.
