US-based car service Uber is looking to hire Australian employees to launch the business locally, after announcing its plans to head to Sydney, and will offer equity options as part of the package.

Uber, which is based in San Francisco, is an on-demand car service, whereby private drivers pick up users based on iPhone, SMS and web-based requests.

“We are a technology start-up that has created a more efficient means of transportation, making your city more useful and more pleasurable to move around in,” the company says on its website.

“Uber connects clients and our network of professional town car and limo drivers in the simplest most elegant way possible, and we do it at a fraction of the cost.”

According to Uber general manager David Rohrsheim, who is based in Sydney, the service is on its way to Australia and is looking to assemble a local team.

“I know there are a few folks here who would be excited to work for one of the hottest start-ups in Silicon Valley right now,” Rohrsheim wrote on Silicon Beach Australia.

“Employees here in Sydney will have the experience of launching a new business in a new region while earning a salary and equity options.”

“We have the freedom to build the Uber that Australia wants, but you will travel to HQ in San Francisco and you will be part of a hilarious global Skype chat room.”

To start off with, Uber is looking for an operations manager and a community manager.

Among other things, the operations manager is expected to have at least two years of experience in data-driven analysis and decision-making, coupled with a “can-do start-up attitude”.

In addition to a salary, both the operations manager and the community manager will receive share options.

According to Uber, the founding Sydney team “will have all the fun of a true start-up”, but will be backed by “significant resources” including engineering, capital, investors and experience.
