THE NEWS WRAP: Public support goes cold on carbon tax

Public support for the carbon tax has hit a record low, according to a new poll, as both main political parties crank up the rhetoric on the scheme, which launched yesterday.

 

A Nielsen poll found that two thirds of Australians do not back carbon pricing, a major reversal on the slight majority that supported it before the 2010 federal election.

 

David Jones set for bidder talks

 

David Jones is set to hold talks this week with a little-known UK investor that has made a $1.65 billion takeover bid for the retail chain.

 

The bid by EB Private Equity saw David Jones’ share price rise by 14.6%, or 33c, on Friday, despite patchy information on who, exactly, is behind the bidder.

 

Samsung smartphone banned in US

 

Samsung’s hopes of making a splash with its new Galaxy Nexus smartphone have hit a major glitch, with an American judge banning its sale in the US due to its ongoing patent dispute with Apple.

 

US District Judge Lucy Koh said Apple “has shown a likelihood of establishing both infringement and validity.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 277.83 points, or 2.20%, to 12,880.09 on Friday. The Australian dollar was up to US102.64 cents.
