New figures from eMarketer show the average time spent on the internet by adults in the US grew by 6% to 155 minutes every day in 2010.

This relates to about two and a half hours per day, and is slowly catching up to the average time spent watching TV at 264 minutes, or four and a half hours.

The amount of time spent on mobile devices also grew by 28%, while the average user now spends about 50 minutes a day on the phone, compared to 30 minutes reading a print newspaper.

The figures come as more publications signal they are heading onto tablet devices such as the iPad, with Rupert Murdoch planning to release an iPad-only news publication next month.
