Australians use texting to share major life events

A new study reveals Australians are more likely to use text messaging to share major life events compared to phone, email or social networking.

Four out of 10 respondents to the Telstra State of the Nation report said they would send between three to seven text messages every day to family and friends. About 44% said they text when by themselves in order to look busy, 34% text at the movies, 21% during a business meeting and 15% at a funeral, christening or wedding.

Social researcher Mark McCrindle said in a statement the report shows how Australians are becoming used to quicker, more effective technology.

“Telstra’s State of The Nation report reveals the uptake and influence of mobile technology on Australians, particularly texting. The fact that one in three prefer texting to other communication forms signals the natural fit of this technology to our increasingly time poor, busy lifestyles,” McCrindle said.
