The world shouldn’t end just yet… for now.

The Large Hadron Collider, which gained international attention due to a German scientist predicting its operation would spell the end of the world, has been shut down for repairs.

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research says it will take several weeks until workers can repair the damaged area, which must first be warmed from its current temperature of near freezing levels.

The Collider will attempt to examine what forms protons by using its tunnels to clash them together at rapid speeds. It is expected to be online in the second quarter of 2009.
