ATO to stick with AUSkey

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) says its newest digital authenticator AUSkey is likely to be around for years after it was hailed as a success by an ATO survey of businesses.

The ATO says it is happy with the balance between usability and security of the system that replaced the ATO Digital Certificates last month.

The new system was found to be secure enough while addressing strong user demands for a “real-time registration process”.

Like Digital Certificates, AUSkey is a form of soft digital PKI (public key infrastructure).

The software based PKI was chosen from seven possible systems and replaces the ‘clunky’ predecessors used by the ATO and other agencies.

AUSkey will be used by 11 other government agencies other than the ATO, including the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, State and Territory Revenue Offices, and including the Australian Business Registry.
